Creating flames either for gaming or for your website can be accomplished in Photoshop. Flames are created using one of the best features Adobe has placed in the software--filters. These filters create the crisp image effects seen in advanced graphic displays.

1
Open a new image project and set the background color to black (#000000) and the foreground color to white (#FFFFFF).

2
Create a new layer by clicking the "Layer" menu, selecting "New" and then "Layer." This creates a new layer on which the flame will be created.

3
Select the brush tool from the toolbox on the left of the screen. Right-click the canvas and select "Brush Options." Choose "Assorted Brushes" from the menu. Select the "Crosshatch" brush. This brush looks like a big "X" in the options.

4
Draw a few wavy lines with the brush on the new layer. Be careful that the lines do not come close to the edge of the sides, or the flames will be cut off on the edges.

5
Select "Filter" from the menu. Select "Blur," then select "Motion Blur." A window pops up with angle settings. Set the angle to 45 degrees and press "OK." The image now has a motion blur effect.

6
Select "Filters" from the menu. Select "Distort" and then "Shear" from the menu options. Set the coordinates in a wavy line and press "OK." This filter is now applied to the image.

7
Select "Image" from the main menu. Select "Mode" and then select "Indexed Color." From the index color box, choose "Black Box" from the drop-down list. This color box is gradient color of black to orange. Click "OK" and the flame effect is seen in the image.
