Use Photoshop to open the image you want to edit and decide where you want the picture to fade out. Think about other layers you might want to add and decide if you want your image to fade into the background or just fade out completely.

Choose the section of your image you want to have appear faded out. Look at the Layers Palette and create a new layer. Open this new layer.

Select the area you want to create a fade with the pen tool, the marquee or the lasso. Select the Gradient Tool from your toolbox.

Look at the Gradient Tool selections above your toolbox and choose to fill your selection with the black/white gradient. Drag your cursor across the section you selected for fading making sure you start with the section you want to be dark and ending with the section you want to be light.

Check your Layers Palette again and click on the Photoshop menu, which says "Normal" then change the "Normal" to "Screen" in the drop-down box.

Select "Layer" from your top menu bar then choose "Flatten Image."
