The creation of the rectangles is one of the most basic functions in Adobe Photoshop, and an essential graphic technique for both beginners and veterans. Adobe's rectangles are easy to create and adjust. The easiest ways to create a rectangle includes the use of the Rectangular Marquee tool and the Rectangle Tool. Use a basic rectangle as the foundation for a wide variety of designs. The possibilities are limitless, and this is part of what makes Photoshop such a flexible design program.


Rectangular Marquee Tool Method

Open Adobe Photoshop and create a new document. Open the Layers palette and create a new empty layer on top of the background layer by clicking on the "Create A New Layer" icon at the bottom right of the Layers palette. Name the layer "Rectangle."

Click on the Rectangular Marquee tool. Make sure your "Rectangle" layer is selected, then click on your workspace and drag out a rectangle of any size. Click on the "Style" drop-down menu in the Marquee toolbar, and select "Fixed Aspect Ratio" or Fixed Size" to create a rectangle with specific dimensions or a fixed size.

Select the "Paint Bucket" tool and fill your rectangle with any color. Click on the "Move" tool. In the "Move" toolbar, select "Show Bounding Box." This makes eight adjustable points visible around the perimeter of your rectangle. Click on any of these points and drag them to adjust your rectangle to any size desired.


Rectangle Tool Method

Create a new document in Photoshop, then open the "Layers" palette and create a new layer on top of the background layer. Name this layer "Rectangle2". Click on the layer to make it active. Click on the "Rectangle" tool and select either "Rectangle" or "Rounded Rectangle".

Adjust the visual qualities of your rectangle in the Rectangle toolbar. Click on the "Style" drop-down menu to add features, such as bevel, pillow and shadow. Click on the "Color" icon to change the color.

Click on your workspace, and drag out a rectangle to your desired specifications. Click on the Move tool and make sure "Show Bounding Box" is selected in the "Move" toolbar. Adjust your rectangle to any size or shape using the eight points surrounding it.
