Current versions of Adobe Photoshop come pre-installed with a variety of powerful filters. Filters apply automatic effects to change and enhance an image. In addition to the pre-installed filters, you can purchase or download free filter plug-ins. Installing filter plug-ins in Photoshop is easy.

 Download the filter plug-in that you want to install from a trusted website. To find a filter from Adobe, click on "Filter>Browse Filters Online." Make sure that the filter is for the operating system you are using.

If the filter provides an installer, open the installer. Follow the onscreen instructions to install the filter.

 If the filter does not provide an installer, open your plug-ins folder. In Windows, open "My Computer" and navigate to "Program Files>Adobe>Adobe Photoshop>Plug-Ins." On a Mac, open the Finder and navigate to "Applications>Adobe Photoshop>Plug-Ins." Drag the filter into this folder.

 Restart Photoshop. The filter will not be active in Photoshop until you restart Photoshop. If Photoshop is open, close Photoshop and then open it again. Select "Filter" and use the new filter.
